Grameen-Jameel
Grameen-Jameel Pan-Arab Microfinance Limited, a joint venture for-profit company with a social purpose, focuses on alleviating poverty in the Arab world through microfinance. Modeled after the social business enterprise concept developed by 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Grameen-Jameel is structured to maximize social impact and reinvests all of its profits in the business rather than distribute dividends.
Grameen-Jameel works through a network of partner microfinance institutions (MFIs) that share its values: commitment to reaching women and the poorest; aggressive growth plans; and financial sustainability. In 2007 alone, it reached more than 200,000 new clients while adding four new partners and entering two new markets. Grameen-Jameel manages its own guarantee pool of $50 million dedicated to the Arab region and often places guarantees jointly with Grameen Foundation’s Growth Guarantee Program; at year-end 2007, the company had placed $13 million in guarantees to generate total financing of $31 million for its partners.
Founded in March 2007, Grameen-Jameel is the outgrowth of a four-year partnership that matches Grameen Foundation’s technical microfinance expertise with Bab Rizq Jameel Limited, a subsidiary of the Abdul Latif Jameel Group’s (ALJ), local knowledge and financial support in an effort to eradicate poverty in the Arab World.
