The Need in Bolivia
With a per capita income of $1,075, Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in South America and its history has been marked by severe political turmoil. More recently, Bolivia has experienced strong economic growth due to hydrocarbon and mineral exports. The country is presently experiencing high levels of foreign reserves and low inflation compared to historical norms.
Bolivia has a strong history of microfinance and the highest rate of penetration in the region at approximately 28 percent (penetration gives the percentage of microenterprises that actually receive microfinance services). Microfinance is an integral part of the economy-at-large and the country has established a strong regulatory system.
